Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure in which skin is repeatedly punctured with tiny and sterile needles. The body heals these punctures which in turn boosts collagen and elastin production. The improved level of collagen and elastin help reduce scars, acne, wrinkles and fine lines.
If you are heading for your first microneedling treatment, there are many things you should know. In fact, your microneedling practitioner will have a peace of mind that you have come prepared.
Let’s have a look on things a microneedling practitioner wants you to follow.
Make sure there are no active breakouts or open lesions; active bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections; or skin cancer in the areas to be treated. For patients who are prone to herpes simplex infections, always ensure that prophylaxis therapy has been warranted to them.
Do not go swimming for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
Share the medications you are taking with your doctor. For example, isotretinoin can interfere with the treatment.
Avoid any self-tanning lotions or sprays for 48 hours prior to the procedure. All the skin products containing vitamin A or retinol should be avoided 24 hours before the procedure. Plus, you should avoid direct sun exposure, as the procedure can’t take place on the areas with sunburn.
On the day of the treatment, you should keep your face clean and not apply makeup. If an active or extreme breakout occurs before treatment, consult the practitioner before the process.
Cleanse your face to ensure the skin is entirely free of makeup or any makeup residue.
Ask how derma rollers work during the procedure and what to expect.
Apply numbing cream (such as TKTX Numb) to help feel comfortable during the procedure. This numbing cream contains lidocaine to eliminate pain during the procedure.
A hydrating skin lotion can be applied to avoid any friction against the skin during the procedure.
Avoid workout and strenuous activity for the first 24 hours of the treatment. Sweating and gym environments are not safe, rife with bacteria, and may lead to negative reactions.
Apply antioxidant serum to the treated area for minimizing inflammation. For one to two days after the procedure, the skin may feel reddish or inflamed. Re-apply it when needed within the first 24 hours.
Don’t use any products that may clog the tiny channels created by micro needling. The clogged pores may cause unfavorable reactions.
So these are the things you should know before and after microneedling treatment. It is better if you consult your practitioner in case of any doubt.
